1.
I left you, weak and feeble I was the wicked witch I gave you warning, you said ‘stay til’ the morning’ You use me now to scratch that itch That she can’t scratch Can’t see her like that Oh, you love her, I become the bitch I see the way it is My birthday, what's it to you anyway? A day to set things straight I’m really showing my age You are a victim to your lack of care You can’t pretend I’m not there You can’t pretend that I never was, cause’ I was I know I was there because You dragged me through the mud Then you kissed me on the lips Then you raved about your freedom, all the things that you won’t miss It's all in your favour, but you act like my saviour Telling me what I need, you embody all the greed you were afraid of When coming out of me Hypocrisy is love, meet me at the altar You say marriage is divorce, you say my body’s what you’re after Touch me under the table, take her out on the town I’m in your family’s thoughts and prayers All atheists devout Tell me just how it is Tell me the way it is Tell me the way it is Tell me the way it is
2.
There’s a list of names I have been eager to erase But I had written them in marker, it's a trouble to forget the names that stain I have been scratching at it, I have been clawing at the page An ugly collage of the men I claim to love then claim to hate And I find it easy Oh it's a breeze to me If burning bridge was clean, I’d make a flame, I’d watch ours gleam But you are beauty with no spine Won’t cause the scene I know that you’d prefer to see Brushing of the fingertips I’m sick of it, I’m sick with it But pity we were so forbidden in a big new city I loved how you moved like a moth to the light off the penny we found on the floor of the brightest lit room I knew we were doomed, did you? That made it easy, earthcrossers wandering Trains gotta blow off steam I am the rail if he’s the wheel I’ll let him move to me And then I’ll sleep

about

With razor-sharp lyrics and soul-stirring melodies, Perth, Australia singer-songwriter Mia June lays bare the complexities and contradictions of human emotion. June’s 2023 debut EP Don’t Forget Your Bags encapsulated the delicate transition from adolescence to adulthood. Now she digs in further with “Moth Penny Casino / The Way It Is” – two singles that highlight June’s ability to ceremoniously blend the rawness of connection into charged, undeniable songwriting.

“Moth Penny Casino” follows a string of serendipitous moments from the discovery of a 10-cent coin on the floor of a casino to an unexpected luminous moth structure on the walk home, building musical vignettes alongside a Fiona Apple-adjacent piano melody. Born from the tumultuous chapter of a fading relationship, “The Way It Is” encapsulates the raw essence of betrayal, spite and longing, resonating with unfiltered intensity and honesty, set atop a swaying, almost trancelike drum beat.

Mia June's latest singles are a mesmerizing odyssey through the peaks and valleys of relationships – both romantic and platonic, interweaving personal narratives with evocative melodies. "Moth Penny Casino / The Way It Is" anchor the essence of Mia June's introspective reflections and unfiltered emotional depths, affirming her as a burgeoning luminary amongst her contemporaries.

Mastered by Dan O’Connor, the studio versions paired alongside the stripped down demos highlight June’s intensity both with a full band and on her own. The depth and timelessness of “Moth Penny Casino / The Way It Is” transport Mia June from a dreamer to a skilled songsmith.
